September 15, 2009 - Its time for the new Fall TV season to begin! Join Murmur writers Conor Kilpatrick, Ron Richards, Paul Montgomery and Kelly Stephenson as they discuss what it is in the new fall season that they're most looking forward to! Along the way, Paul reveals an unexpected love, Conor admits he has a Thursday night problem, Kelly is almost convinced to watch Dollhouse and Ron threatens to do an entire show on Beverly Hills, 90210.
Listen to the Podcast:
I'm going to add another show to my list: MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE. Ray Romano, Scott Bakula and Andre Braugher. Two of my favorite actors and a sitcom star stretching to dramedy. Looks good!
I'm surprised by the lack of love for Big Bang Theory. I hope that moving it away from How I Met Your Mother doesn't hurt it; those two shows were so perfect back to back, while you couldn't pay me to watch Two and a Half Men. The new Jenna Elfman show doesn't really look good, either. Maybe CBS will watch and see and adjust accordingly. But if you haven't seen Big Bang, check it out. Jim Parsons deserves his Emmy nod, and I'm glad he's in the running for best actor.
Also, isn't Lie to Me back in the fall on Monday? That makes for a really crowded night. Another show worth watching, if only for Tim Roth.
Big Bang is my dad's favorite show. He's been watching season one on a loop since it was released on dvd. He's always asking me to identify geek logos on the guys' t-shirts. While a lot of people take issue with the iffy portrayal of comic fandom on the show, it actually gives me another thing to talk about with my dad, which is always cool. I don't watch it quite so religiously, but what I have seen I've liked.
I thought it was funny that everyone was so agog Paul doesn't have a DVR. I didn't think it was that unusual, but then I don't watch a lot of TV. Listening to this podcast, though, I couldn't help wondering if I don't bother with a DVR because I watch so little TV, or if I don't bother with TV because I don't have a DVR. Now that I don't get a daily paper, and shows are scheduled so irregularly, I have absolutely no idea when anything is on unless people talk about it on the Internet.
Incidentally, I don't even think getting a DVR would be all that expensive; I just dread dealing with customer service at Comcast, so I haven't even asked what getting one would involve. Maybe when I move. Though I have to say, listening to the podcast, there was nothing that made me think, "Damn, I should be watching that!" Not a fault of the podcasters -- you guys do a great job, as always -- just my own disinterest.
I will be watching Southland and 30 Rock, though, and will likely catch Dollhouse on Hulu when there's a guest star I care about. And Mad Men, of course, but (a) Comcast has that on demand and (b) I count it more as a summer show since I've already been watching for a month.
why top chef is made of win:
tonight i turned leftover mushroom risotto into little breaded balls of mushroom risotto stuffed with fresh goat's milk cheese (not impressive-i followed a recipe: http://guiltykitchen.com/?p=449).
THEN because the little balls were still missing something, i made up a sauce to dip them in using mayo, hot sauce, lemon juice, garlic, and truffle salt.
top chef not only gave me the "you can do it!" attitude, but taught me that adding the truffle salt would not only make it tasty, but would tie the flavor back to the mushrooms in the risotto. i'm not saying any of it would have won me a trip to aspen, but it was certainly something that had roots in top chef viewing (and also, good eats).
That last line sounds like an Alton Brown line. I would recommend The Next Iron Chef which will begin airing soon.
i cant get into iron chef, even the american one with alton brown. paul mentioned how odd/frustrating it can be to watch a food competition show and not be able to taste anything, and i think that's part of the reason that iron chef doesn't work for me. i don't get to know these people and i can't taste anything so i care less.
Great show guys!
My favourite bit, when discussing George Takei:
Ron: "Is he dead?"
Everyone else: "no no no"
Ron: (in background, sorta) "Oh, yeah, he's gay."
He says it as if the two are interchangable. Cracked me up.
No Fringe? One of the best shows on the TV last year and I really enjoyed Walter as a character. While it does get crammed into that Thursday lineup, it is on my watch list for this new season.
it's a good thing we didn't talk about fringe. i would have had to confess to my pacey-crush. (although it didn't make the cut last season)
@Kelly: Then I would have told you that I saw him walking around Greenwich Village last year, back when they were still shooting FRINGE in New York City.
@conor which may have ended up with me lamenting about not living in a city where people film shows and movies all the time and/or about how bat-shit this town went when george clooney filmed here for a couple of weeks.
You guys going to to the live blog for Fringe again? Really enjoyed the conversations on that when it happened last year.
Seriously enjoying the podcasts and the site. Thanks for the effort, everyone.
I have not completely finished with the podcast, but I was a little saddened that BETTER OFF TED didn't get a mention. I know it was a mid-replacement show and only ran about nine episodes, but it has a wonderful cast and the writing is amazing. If you aren't currently watching it, make an effort to pick up what episodes there are. Like GLEE (and the late PUSHING DAISIES), it strikes me as smart, quirky television that won't last long.
Kelly, you did miss out on TOP CHEF MASTERS. The first half of the season was a bit boring, but the last half, when it was a competition where we saw the same chefs competing week after week, was fun. I'm assuming it did decently in the ratings, so maybe we'll get a season 2.
I've gotta agree with Conor that I'm stoked about the Thursday night line-up of comedy on NBC. I enjoyed PARKS & RECREATION last year and the debut of COMMUNITY looks promising. Combine those with 30 ROCK and THE OFFICE and I'm parked for two hours.
Paul, I'm with you on the lack of DVR. Unfortunately, with the way state legislators are leering at library funding like underfed castaways on a desert island would look at a single, malnourished turkey, my wife and I aren't looking to increase any monthly expenditures anytime soon.
I'm glad someone else will be watching Eastwick (or at least trying it out). I was fascinated with the movie was I was younger, so I'm really interested in seeing what they do with the series.
Also, I have two TiVos... and there's nothing wrong with that!
i *just* found out this existed by following jane espenson on twitter! (http://twitter.com/capricaseven)
she said something the other day about having almost all the episodes written for season one, and syfy.com's teaser site says that the first episode will air 1/22/10 in the states: http://www.syfy.com/caprica/
Great podcast as always guys. That discussion with 90210 and Gilmore Girls was hysterical.
I've stated, probably twice now on here, what my schedule is for Fall this year. But I'm totally with ron on Heroes. If anyone remembers my posting on ifanboy when they aired; that show went from great idea to bomb in a hurry. After that insulting last episode I have totally committed myself to never watch it again.
.....For realz this time....
Heroes was an amazingly clean break in this house. We watched it religiously (in the fervent sense) until the season one finale, when Sylar-who-must-be-stopped-at-all-costs lived. Then, we watched it religiously (in the "thing you do every week out of tradition and obligation" sense) for another season or so, up until the point when they all became fugitives. My wife and I looked at each other in unison and said, "Mmmmno." It was amazing.
I don't think HEROES is *that* bad, but I think I'm the only one. I'm not saying it's great. It definitely de-railed, but no worse than LOST.
Although, if they keep pimping this "I'm a sexually curious/confused co-ed" thing with Claire, I may have to drop it out of principal.
I can't wait to here this. But itunes is taking an awfully long time publishing this podcast.
Damn you Itunes!!!!

We should do a mid-fall checkup on what's endured from these predictions :)
