Its time I accepted g0ogfgnewt's drawing challenge. The film I chose was Shade, a 2003 film starring Stuart Townsend, Gabriel Byrne, Thandie Newton, Jamie Foxx, Melanie Griffith and Sylvester Stallone. It clocks in at about 101 minutes. Here are the rules that g0ogfgnewt has laid out for us.
1. Choose a film.
2. Choose a chracter or theme for a pic.
3. You have from the opening scene to the closing credit of said movie to attempt to finish this picture related to said movie.
4. Sketches and layout is allowed but are included in the drawing time. The more you sketch, the less time you have to draw your final piece.
5. Once the movie is finished, pencils down!
Starting off, I thought I was wayyy over my head. As I am not an artist, so after pouring myself a stronger drink (green tea vodka and oj), I let 5 minutes of time waste away staring at a blank page. The tag line for the film is "Lie, cheat, steal...your deal." I knew I wanted to incorporate this into the drawing.
Taking g0ogfgnewt's advice that it's not cheating, I used a little photo reference. Since I couldn't find cards (didn't want to waste time looking), I used a couple packs of gum. The basic theme of the picture will be how each player is cheating, a palmed card in one hand, and card up the sleeve in the other.
Now that I came up with an idea but wasn't sure how to add in a character. So I just shifted the cards to the left and left a space to add in a character later playing against the cards. Sorry the pencils are so light, next time I will sketch a little darker so it shows up better for the camera.
At this point I was thinking it was going to be Jamie Foxx's character that would be placed on the page but I did a quick sketch of him and it looked terrible. So I went with Sly Stallone.
Don't look much like Sly does it?
Starting to add some sharpie to the page, could have used a better sharpie! Note to anyone that does this, use proper pencils and pens. I used a shitty pencil and a black sharpie that is running out of ink.

More blacks, the picture is starting to take some shape but I was running out of time though so I skipped the background idea and left it blank.
Time is up!
But since the movie is about cheating I thought I would give myself another 10 minutes!!! I wouldn't say it is a finished drawing but I liked adding the red to the cards. You can barely tell but Sly is supposed to have a card up his sleeve.
Not sure when I would do this again but I had a blast doing it. I am a terrible artist but I do like to pick up a pencil. Maybe this will get me watching more movies and get me drawing at the same time.
