October 13, 2009 - This week on Murmur, Ryan Penagos, Paul Montgomery and Ron Richards dig their heels in deep for the longest Murmur podcast ever. There's even a cameo appearance by the talented Elizabeth Keenan, who drops some music knowledge on the boys as they discuss the latest in music, as well some some movies like Zombieland, Coco Before Chanel, We Live in Public and the Lord of the Rings with a live orchestra. The boys also get their geek on as they admit that the iPhone is pretty cool and we don't quite know what to make of Google Wave.
Listen to the Podcast:
wow, way late to this one, but I wanted to see Zombieland first. Didn't think Eisenberg played a douche in Adventureland, though. Love Girls....
Nice job as always. I particularly liked the complete opposite ends of the spectrum in music criticism -- Paul's impressionistic reviews, and Elizabeth's extremely informed-yet-still-engaging-to-laypeople ones. Not to slight Ron & Ryan's contributions, which are always interesting, but I was most struck by those two approaches. I'd love to hear more from Elizabeth, I was really impressed -- if she and Ron did a whole podcast on Britpop, I'd happily listen!
Seriously. Google image search "Montgomery clan crest" or "Montgomerie clan crest". It's a looped belt framing the lady from the Columbia pictures logo. But she's holding an anchor and a severed head.
It's so effing metal we'd set off every alarm at the airport even if we showed up naked.
Having seen Vivian Girls at the Flow festival in Helsinki I have to say that the only one of them who can actually play is their drummer. It was painful and seeing them live I can definately understand why it's called shitgazing.
Damn that sounded harsher than it was meant to be I am only commenting on their music.
Music! Yaaaaay.
I saw We Were Promised Jetpacks a couple of years ago at a ridonkulously tiny gig (I think I might have even taken tickets for it.) They're pretty great! I didn't even know they had an album out now.
I may be biased, living here and all, but I think Glasgow is one of the greatest centres for live music I know. It was even voted "best UK city for live music" not too long ago by NME or someone.
Anyway, if you dig Scottish indie bands (Paul mentioned something of that nature), might I suggest: The Ghosties, The Darien Venture, Randolph's Leap or Drive-by Argument (now known as "Atlas Skye")? All very, um, accenty.
Wow, this comment has gotten far more patriotic than I intended. I'll stop.
i think the first topic on the next podcast will be whether it's pronounced nanoRYEmo or nanoREEmo ;)
I saw Girls open for Los Campesinos! a few weeks back. Didn't really feel it and actually seeing them live made me not want to pick it up. (proof = http://www.flickr.com/photos/lhkwok/3816399486/in/set-72157622019021412/ )
I think...I felt like Paul might have felt during the music section; Loss and slightly afraid, yet intrigued at how much Ron and Elizabeth love New Order.
I'll probably check out Big Pink and Fun sometime this week.
One thing I didn't get--when was Muse too serious? Granted, I haven't listened to The Resistance yet, but I always looked at them as a more modern, electronic version of Queen. It's hard to think of them as "too serious" when you've seen their video of Knights of Cydonia.
I'm happy to see fun. and Brand New mentioned on here. Just wanted to say that Brand New newest album wasn't that good compared to there three other albums though.

After hearing Fun. on your show I had to immediately purchase it on my Iphone. Be Calm has become one of my favorite songs now.
