July 7, 2009 - The second installment of the Murmur podcast checks in with the Music section as Ron Richards, Gordon Strain and Ryan Penagos discuss some of the good, the bad and the disappointing in the world of music recently. We've got some new records from favorite artists like Bob Mould and Regina Spektor, some new music from the likes of Passion Pit and Au Revoir Simone, the question of concept albums thanks to Green Day and The Decemberists, and go back into the vault to rock out to Avail.
Listen to the Podcast:
Just finished listening to the show. great stuff. I had never heard of a lot of these bands, but some of them really interest me. And if you guys DO go ahead with the "Cover song" edition, here is my suggestion for an unusual one: Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild" as performed by Stars of Stage of Screen. A very different take on the song.
Saw Camera Obscura live show last month. Very workmanlike. It was all about the music. The only person that got a little bit animated was the tambourine guy, who danced his ass off. Still, their music translates well live and had a great time. They were just on Craig Fergeson recently and you can see their performance of "French Navy" from the show on YouTube.
Loved the show, right up my alley when it comes to music. I would love a show just dedicated to covers, some of my favourites in the cover genre that can be found easily on youtube.

Not sure if Spotify is available in the states if it is and you have check out the albums "Even better then the real thing".
I just finished listening to the show, and while I tried to enjoy the music discussed and sampled, I didn't. I guess I'm just not into indie rock. I know you guys are still working out formats, etc., but since this is kind of a broad multimedia show, having the only music show/portion be about indie rock seems a bit odd.
But wait, I have more comments!
That Bob Mould song... that's a country song. It might not be by a country singer, but the thing was a standard country song structure. No question. So there's your indie rock.
Also, one of the things that I've always loved about Avail is that they're quite political. The songs have opinions on all sorts of stuff, like local environmental issues in Virginia, and the effects of the University. Interesting stuff, and I always liked that the songs were about something.
It is a country song. And a damn good one.
Life And Times isn't growing on me yet (outside that song). It sounds like his solo debut Workbook a bit, and I love Workbook, so I don't know what my deal is. Bob's coming to 1st Avenue in October, so maybe after hearing it live I'll like it better.
I'm listening, and you're talking about the Au Revoir Simone song, and everyone's like... It's "OK".
It's not. It's boring and awful and the worst kind of "A for Effort" mediocre. There I said it!
Loved it. I couldn't wait for you all to put out a music podcast.
Passion Pit is such a fun record. Don't feel bad. I've found the new Phoenix album to have the same fun summer vibe, without the helium voice.
The Pains of Being Pure were a fun discovery, though I'm not necessarily into MBV. There's some real sweetness underneath all the fuzz.
Definitely felt the opposite about the concept albums. I had no idea what the Decemberists story was about w/o looking online. Didn't really dig it.
And I would pay a LOT of money to see Sharon Jones and the Deftones.
Ron - Being a Mates of State fan, is there no love for the new Matt & Kim album?
Excellent work, gentlemen. Ron is absolutely right about the "Away We Go" Soundtrack - I downloaded it as soon as I got home. I even enjoyed Alexi Murdock's cover of "Orange Sky"- and I usually hate covers of Nick Drake's work
i am unspeakably excited for the Decemberists show on August 13 in Buffalo. Glad to have you back on the interwebs. Gordon

Are they really Experts? I'd say you guys have just as much,if not more, cred as Pitchfork and Rolling Stone.
