The emotional alchemy involved in making an amazing album doesn't neccesairly have to be a knock out drag out brawl or a sonic slog through the and down out and dire emotional dregs. Sometimes an amazing record just makes you smile. By that measure, 'Tomorrow is Alright,' is an amazing record.
Founded by Sonny Smith in 2007 with a little help from his friends, Shayde Sartin, Tim Cohen and Kelley Stoltz (the band has since gone through a line-up change with only Stoltz and Smith remaining and joined by new editions Tahalia Harbour and Ryan Browne), Sonny and the Sunsets are based out of San Francisco and released this LP through Soft Abuse in October of 2009.
Like their contemporaries the Best Coast, Sonny and the Sunsets influences are deeply steeped in the easy breezy california sound of the 50s and 60s, but unlike Best Coast (who re-imagine surf rock as east coast shoe gazer) Smith and Co. combine the homespun twang of the bakersfield sound with the lush layers of the early Beach Boys, to create modern lo-fi delights. The songs on 'Tomorrow is Alright,' shamble on with the sunny pluck of a beach bonfire sing-a-long. There are hand claps, there are finger snaps, there is a lot of fun to be had. Get into it.
STAND OUT TRACKS:
Too Young to Burn The first track on an album is too laid back to call a mission statement, but give it a listen and you'll pretty much be able to decide if you're going to get into 'Tomorrow is Alright' or not.
Stranded An amazing lazy susan of a song, amicably ambles in sonic shambles of voice cracking vocals and lackadaisical la-la-las.
Chapters AWESOME!
Lovin' On an Older Gal EQUALLY AWESOME!
Planet of Women A sci-fi journey into the dark heart of man......not really, it's goofy, it's fun and you might just learn something in and has everyone's favorite pop song staple of 'sing talking' See also the Brunette's Mars Loves Venus.
