On the morning of December 1, 2009, I woke up to find a very brief email in my inbox saying "So... still wanna be on staff?" After an obscene amount of arm-flailing, fist pumping, inane grinning and joyful squeals, I think I managed to write back "Yes, please." After a few days the initial glee wore off and slowly I started to panic:

Oh dear god, what if they ask me to be on a podcast?

Fast forward to December 14 and the appearance of an email from Paul titled "Book Club Podcast" (one of the great things about being on the Murmur staff is occasionally getting email from guys at iFanboy). I took a few deep breaths and opened the email. This was the email I was both excitedly anticipating and quietly dreading. It took about a minute for me to realize I was just staring at my computer screen and not actually reading the email. Obviously I said yes. And I should point out that while I was (and still kind of am) super nervous about the whole ordeal, I was also (and still kind am) absolutely over the moon with excitement. I mean, this was THE call to do THE Murmur podcast. I'd been hoping for an email like this since July.

The plan was this: Paul, Kelly, and special guest Josh Christie (and me) would use the podcast to discuss Beat the Reaper, our first Book Club book. We'd record after the New Year and Paul would handle the recording and editing of the show.

So my first hurdle was a microphone and Skype. Paul sent me the Amazon link for the headset he was currently using and I just added to my Christmas shopping list. That was easy. More on Skype in a bit.

Next we kicked around some other ideas for segments via email. Kelly was the one who came up with New Years Resolutions and Booze (because she's awesome). I threw a couple ideas in because I needed to say something other than "duuuuhh, I dunno" (which is what I was thinking). We had a rough sketch of what we were going to discuss.

And then the madness of the holidays hit and I forgot all about it (honestly, I didn't pick up Beat the Reaper until the 28th. I read a bulk of it on January 4 when I was home sick). When the dust settled in January, Paul went back out to us all so we could firm up when we were recording and finalize the discussion topics.

A few hours before we were set to record, we got a script from Paul. Now here's where I start to panic because it's all become very real. This is actually going to happen. I still had 30 pages left in the book as of 6pm. And aside from some random "talking points" I had floating around in my head, I got nothing. Nothing. What happens if I pull a Kinsey?

Then there were the possible technical issues. Up until this point I had never used Skype. At all. I mean, I downloaded the free iPhone app months ago, but lord help me if I had to actually use the thing. So when my netbook literally started ringing at 9:30 and I still didn't have my headset/microphone thingy plugged in, I was in a state of sheer terror. This is when I poured myself a glass of wine.

And then my netbook started talking to me with the dulcet voice of Paul Montgomery, which was very confusing. But magically everything started working and I'm chatting with Paul and Josh, waiting for Kelly to sign in. And suddenly I can breathe again. This is mostly due to Paul, who is very calm and very professional - that's not to say Kelly and Josh weren't awesome, because they so were (by the way, Paul's Skype avatar is Snoopy, and it's just impossible to panic when Snoopy's around). Next thing you know Kelly was on the call and it's off to the races.

The rest is kind of a blur to me. There were a couple rough spots, but from what I remember it was a nice, easy conversation. I think I was trying a bit too hard, but I don't think I completely embarrassed myself (except maybe with the "lady of the night" thing - I was trying not to say whore and I blanked). I did have a lot of "umm"s and "like"s, which I'm not thrilled about. But overall I think they'll ask me back... maybe... I hope.

What kind of headphone do you use?

I used the Plantronics Foldable USB Stereo Headset - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VVXO7E/ref=oss_T15_product

Wow. You did great, and congrats on your first podcast. Didn't sound like it was your first at all. It was interesting that you have book reports to do for the show. Feels like doing homework in high school. Hope I can hear more of you in future podcasts. =)

I'm with Paul and Kelly - you were a consummate professional. If you hadn't mentioned before the show that you had never done a podcast before, and were nervous, I never would have guessed either.

Oh, and the lady of the night comment was one of my favorite lines of the show.

Can't wait to hear you on future Murmur podcasts!

You were great Ali! I hope you do more Murmurs in the future, as I think you & Kelly add a really good dynamic to the show.

And I consider myself a pretty open-minded "foodie", but I have to say that bacon vodka sounds horrible

I made it as well when I heard on twitter that she was making it. My reaction was about the same. Odd but not terrible. Not quite good enough drink often.

I guess, like she said, it would probably be amazing in a Bloody Mary. But I can't imagine any bacon/vodka drinks beyond that.

Getting a little peek behind the curtain is usually interesting and this was no exception. Thanks, Ali! And I'm looking forward to hearing you in the future.

Tomorrow is housework day for me so I'll be plugging in this podcast and going.

Among other things it'll be nice to put a voice to the tweets.

I understand the "ums" and "likes. When I started doing my show I was very big on editing those all out. Then I realized it was eating up so much time, that I just put them out. 17 episodes in, I got no time to take out 30'000 ums.

But it was a good episode, and you came off natural Ali. SO well done, and look forward to you doing more murmur-sodes and perhaps starting your own or appearing on others. This podcasting this is like a drug, you do one, you want to try others (Or maybe that's more like wine, either way, it's like some addictive vice)

I can say I honestly didn't notice the "umm"'s and "like"'s you were talking about. You did a great job, like all the other Mumur staff does.

Paul probably edited out all of hers and everyone else's.

It is so nice to have someone on the staff who needs to be talked down more than Kelly.

Honestly, the first time I co-hosted iFanboy's Pick of the Week podcast, I was plagued with self-doubt, but I quickly realized that as long as you're with the pros who've done it 100 times they will never let you look bad. Then, before you know it, you've done it 100 times. Give or take 85.

Of course, all I've ever had to do was talk. Put me in charge of the recording (which is to say, screwing up the recording) and I would be a flaming disaster.

You know where I think the nerves come in? It's not that you're podcasting; it's that you're on a podcast that you used to just listen to. Suddenly, the voices in your headphones are talking to you. It's like posting on the SNL message boards and then having Lorne Michaels call and ask you to be the musical guest. Over time, you get to know them as people and it settles down a great deal.

you are all still comic gods to me... except for Kelly, who is geek goddess extraordinaire.

this echo's my staffening/podcasting experience as well, except i kept saying no until a podcast came along that i couldn't turn down (and several i did turn down that i ended up regretting).

also, i still get overly nervous ;)

Flag

you mean it doesn't get easier? ;)

Wednesday, January 13, 2010 10:02 PM

Flag

it gets more familiar, which is a form of easier.

it depends on the content and the cast, too. it's always easiest for me when jim's on the podcast since i'm used to talking to him. ...although then i'm worried about sounding like an idiot in front of real-life friends *and* internet friends :)

You are an insane person.

You did great. Which helped me a lot because it was my first time producing the show. As such, I was a basketcase. But in the end it was a lot of fun, and I'm glad you're on board for more of these.

Flag

I'd love an article on the production side of thing, going over some editing tips and tricks from some of you people that have done it before.

I would also like to know if there are any tips or tricks. ;)

Nah, I mean, I just use GarageBand and play through chronologically, cutting any gaps or pauses, maybe trimming some sections that don't really add to the conversation as a whole (I ramble A LOT). It's really just a matter of sitting and listening.

@Paul if you were a basketcase it did not show at all, you seemed cool as a cucumber.

@Paul - Wow. You always seems so even-keeled. I'm not sure I can picture you any other way. Plus, in my head, you're constantly wearing an ascot, smoking a pipe, and wearing that Charlie Brown wrist-thing.

Wow didn't realize this comment was so expanded upon. I dissapeared because I think Paul and I were new in our internet friendship. So it was like "hi" "hi" great to meet you. Like wise. Small talk. Awkward silence. Then gotta go!

This time we have quite a rivalry between us so I am sure when wee each other again we will either kiss or fight. Who knows?

@gobo I was going to go to Stich but.....let's just say that there was a girl involved. But I live in NYC now so I will definitly be there this year.

Looking forward to listening to this tomorrow. I still get super nervous recording Internet Boyfriends *shameless plug* and drink profusely before and during. We don't even have a script or any sort of plan with each episode.

I'm hoping to get over that sooner than later though.
