January 12, 2010 - The first podcast of 2010 bring Paul, Kelly and new Murmur staff writer Ali as well as a special guest, Murmur user Josh as they gather to discuss the New Year, various kitchen adventures and the Murmur Book Club, discussing Josh Bazell's Beat the Reaper.
Listen to the Podcast:
Kelly, I think I am in love with you. At least I think it was Kelly and not Ali.
You said you have an excell spreadsheet of all the stuff you want to get done. I did the same exact thing. I have media goals each week, Watch and return x number of netflix movies a week, read X number of comics a day, spend x number of hours playing video games.
I used to even use a random number generator to determine which tv show or video game I was going to play. I'm sure thats even more nerdy lol.
as with every podcast, there are always things i wish i'd said/clarified/etc the moment we stop taping. this time the list looks like this:
-i should mention that when i'm not pregnant, i'm trying to lose 30+ pounds. mine is not a form to be envied.
-if you think that infusing vodka with fruit nets you fruit infused with vodka, you will be disappointed. all the flavor leaves the fruit and it tastes like pure grain alcohol (or so i suspect). those apples were foul.
-i thought i liked Beat the Reaper well enough when i was reading it, and during the book discussions on the site. it wasn't until we started talking about it on the podcast that i realized how much it annoyed me. words are funny like that, especially when you consider yourself an introvert.
-so far, i love "the magicians" with my whole heart. :)
Awesome podcast. Great hearing from Ali and Josh!
My reaction to 'Beat the Reaper' was a lot like Paul's -- I don't think I would have kept reading based just on the first chapter, but I'm glad I kept with it because the narrator's voice could have talked me into anything.
Just finished listening, and Iā??m really enjoying how the show is evolving. Good banter, and a nice selection of eclectic topics. Though it seems like the original iFanboy crew of Josh, Conor and Ron are slowly stepping away from Murmur (I never even see them here on the site anymore), and a new group is slowly taking their place. This isnā??t a bad thing, mind you, just seems like the iFanboy crew gave birth to this idea, and now a new set of adoptive parents have stepped in and are doing a wonderful job of raising it.
A fun episode. It is great to hear more voices adding to this podcast, so Ali and Josh were a welcome addition. Good work, both of you.
Ali - Back when my fiancee was in Boston and I was living alone in Michigan, I went to movies every weekend by myself. I got used to it fairly quickly. Making a resolution to see a movie every weekend will cause you to see a few clunkers. Can't believe I paid to see DEJA VU.
Paul - I got WII FIT PLUS recently but have only cracked the case once. Getting some sort of Murmur fitness club going (perhaps WII FIT PLUS specific) would be great. I love how it tracks everything so that you can see your progress. I think this could be a lot of fun and if people are doing it together, it'll be more motivation to continue for everyone. Just a thought.
I immediately forgot everything about it as I left the theater. In fact, if you hadn't mentioned that Val Kilmer was even in it, I would have thought the only star in the film was Denzel. So I guess it wasn't so much a clunker as a fleeting memory. Either way, I wish I hadn't paid full price for it. :)
Great episode guys, it was the first thing I listened to while at work. The New Years resolution talk was really interesting. And I think everyone listening could understand the weight loss resolution. That was mine last year for the first time, and it ended up working (70 lbs since last year down), this year, it's about keeping it off. Also the movie a week thing, if that be in the theater or on DVD, I want to see a new movie.
And after litsening to this episode, I want a drink...and to read more books.
70 lbs is great work! You should certainly be proud of yourself. I really need to start working on that.
I've had an issue with weight for years. What finally did it for me was understanding that just giving up certain foods felt like a punishment. Also when I'd get bored I'd snack. I finally decided to turn that around. My favorite junk foods are cereal, fries and for some time oreos. I knew I couldn't just give those up, so I found alternatives. So I started eating healthy cereals, natural cut fries, and started buying those 100 Cal. packs of Oreos. Eventually I just weened myself off Oreos and other junk things. But I still allow myself the occasional night of ice cream or pizza. I find (And often heard) it's better to just slowly alternate your life then totally dropping things, because you feel like you're then punishing yourself. So now when I'm bored, instead of snack I record a podcast, pick up a book or go running. It's just small changes and not drastic ones. But that's my opinion, different strokes different folks you know.
